9:00 am – Pickup at Kagoshima Cruise Terminal

Meet your private driver and English-speaking guide at the port. A short orientation introduces Kagoshima’s history, known as the “Naples of the East” for its seaside setting and fiery volcano backdrop.

9:45 – 11:30 am – Sengan-en Garden & Shimazu Residence

• Explore the expansive Sengan-en Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the powerful Shimazu clan. 
• Stroll among koi ponds, bamboo groves, and seasonal flower beds with panoramic views of Sakurajima volcano across Kinko Bay.

12:45 – 2:00 pm – Sakurajima Volcano Excursion

• Cross the bay by scenic drive or optional ferry to Sakurajima Island, the city’s iconic active volcano. 
• Stop at Yunohira Observatory for sweeping views of craters and smoking peaks. 
• Pause at the lava fields created by past eruptions, where unique volcanic rock formations tell the story of nature’s power. 
• If time permits, visit the Nagisa Lava Trail, a short, easy path that winds through cooled lava landscapes along the sea.
   

2:30 – 3:30 pm – Kirishima Shrine (Kirishima Jingu)

• Travel inland to the lush forests of the Kirishima mountains. 
• Visit the sacred Kirishima Shrine, with its striking vermilion torii gate and ornate wooden halls. 
• Learn about its deep connection to Japanese mythology — believed to be the site where gods descended to earth in the country’s origin story. 
• Take a peaceful walk along the forested shrine approach, a spiritual counterpoint to the volcano’s raw energy.
   

3:45 – 4:15 pm – Onsen Footbath Experience

• Relax at a local hot-spring footbath, where naturally heated waters soothe tired feet while you gaze out at scenic surroundings. 
• This short but memorable stop highlights Kagoshima’s geothermal culture and connection to healing waters.
   

4:15 – 5:00 pm – Return to Cruise Terminal

Drive back to Kagoshima Port with time to spare before your ship’s departure. Your guide will ensure a smooth return and can assist with last-minute shopping or photo stops if time allows.
